Here is a sentence that surprises people at dinner parties: the largest park in Bangkok is not in the city centre. It is here, in Prawet, and it sits next to a lake where you can learn to sail for less than the price of a movie ticket. The southeast is Bangkok’s weekend secret, and these are the places that prove it.
Suan Luang Rama IX — the King’s garden
Opened on 1 December 1987 to mark King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s sixtieth birthday, Suan Luang Rama IX covers 500 rai — about 80 hectares — making it the largest park in the city. It is really several places at once: formal botanical gardens, a large lake, and the pavilion of exhibits honouring King Rama IX. Come in early December for the annual flower festival, when the whole park is replanted into colour and half of Bangkok seems to arrive with cameras. One practical warning from a local: the Yellow Line station named ‘Suan Luang Rama IX’ is more than a kilometre from the actual gate — plan the last leg by motorcycle taxi or on foot.
Bueng Nong Bon — sail a flood-control lake
Next door, the great lake of Nong Bon is a piece of infrastructure moonlighting as a playground. Built as one of King Rama IX’s flood-management projects — it holds runoff from Bangkok’s east side in the rainy season — it now hosts the Nong Bon Water Sports Center, where the public can sail, windsurf and kayak on remarkably affordable terms, with a four-kilometre bike and jogging loop around the shore and a dog park for good measure. It opens daily from 5:30 in the morning to 6 in the evening. There is something very much of this district about it: a practical thing, built for floods, that residents quietly turned into joy.
The best infrastructure does two jobs. Our lake holds back the floods — and teaches children to sail.
The Train Night Market — engines and dinner
Behind Seacon Square on Srinagarindra Road, Thursday through Sunday from 5pm to 1am, the Train Night Market unrolls its mix of street food, vintage warehouses, antiques, and — improbably — rows of hotrods and American muscle cars. It is loud, young, and entirely unpretentious. I wrote about the food side in the district food map; go for dinner, stay for the neon.
Seacon Square & Paradise Park — the district’s living rooms
Seacon Square opened on 4 September 1994 — Princess Sirindhorn presided — and at half a kilometre long it remains one of Thailand’s largest malls, home of the country’s first Lotus store. Paradise Park sits further up Srinagarindra. Since 2023 the Yellow Line monorail has linked both to the wider city, and on any hot Sunday these are the district’s true living rooms: three generations, one air-conditioning bill.
Make a day of it
The efficient loop: morning at Rama IX Park while it is cool, lunch and a lazy afternoon at Seacon or on the Nong Bon shore, then the night market from dinner onward. Every stop is within a few kilometres of the others — which is, quietly, the point. A district built for farming became a district built for living.
